Things to see and do

CHAPELLE NOTRE-DAME-DE-LOURDES - LE MALZIEU-VILLE

Following the destruction of the oratory on the archway of the lower gate of the market town in the 16th century, a new place of pilgrimage was built on the heights of the town at the end of the 19th century. This chapel features a simple architectural style, with a focus on vertical height. It is dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes.

CITÉ MÉDIÉVALE DU MALZIEU

Let yourself be enchanted by the charm of the cobbled streets, fortified towers, ramparts and superbly restored gates. This charming medieval town, nestled on the banks of the Truyère, can be explored via a historical trail covering the medieval period, the Wars of Religion, the Beast of Gévaudan, and the Mont-Mouchet maquis...

CROIX DE JUSTICE - LE MALZIEU-VILLE

Standing six metres tall, the cross in Malzieu’s market square bears witness to the town’s power in the 14th century. The presence of a carved hand at the top of the shaft on the eastern side also attests to the purpose of this monument, which served as the ‘cross of justice’ for the Barons of Mercœur. This cross may date from the 14th century, but there is no record to confirm this.

EGLISE COLLÉGIALE SAINT-HIPPOLYTE - LE MALZIEU-VILLE

The present-day St Hippolyte Collegiate Church is the third church to stand on this site in Malzieu. The first church, built in the Romanesque style, was destroyed in 1573 during the Wars of Religion. It was rebuilt in 1582 in the Gothic style. As it had become too small, Father Clavel replaced it with a new, larger church in the Neo-Romanesque style in 1882. It houses a collection of liturgical objects and the Virgin of Apcher.

L'ETANG DE LA CHAZETTE

Formed from a former gravel pit, the area surrounding this lake is ideal for walking and exploring unspoilt nature. Numerous species of birds, both native and migratory, have been recorded here. Otters have also made their home here.

LA TRUYERE

A quiet mid-mountain river and the main tributary of the Lot, the Truyère winds its way through the Massif Central for nearly 170 km. It rises in Lozère at an altitude of 1,450 metres in the heart of the Margeride mountains.

MUSÉE DE L'ANCIEN COUVENT DES URSULINES

The building was occupied by the Ursuline nuns from 1618 to 1792, who were renowned in the region for the quality of their teaching. The building’s unique feature lies in a nun’s cell, where the murals depict the Virgin Mary and Saint Mary Magdalene in meditation, surrounded by fruit and plants. This is a very rare example of murals expressing popular devotion.
