Jardins de l'Abbaye de Fontenay

RD32, 21500 Marmagne

CallWebsiteDirections

Created in 1997 by Peter Holmes, the abbey garden is classified as a ‘Jardin Remarquable’ and subtly combines elements of a landscape garden and a French formal garden.

Following the discovery of the abbey, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, visitors can now linger on the grounds and stroll freely through the two-hectare park, with its centuries-old trees, trout pond and large French-style garden where the final scenes of ‘Cyrano de Bergerac’ were filmed. Since 1997, the entire park has been enhanced and transformed into a landscaped garden by landscape architect Peter Holmes. The plantings have now reached maturity and enthusiasts can admire a wide variety of roses, viburnum, choisya and hydrangeas along the paths and lawns that punctuate the space around the Cistercian buildings. The French-style ornamental garden has been awarded the ‘Jardin Remarquable’ label. A visit to the gardens is included in the Abbey’s admission price.
