PLATEAU DE CHARPAL
48170 Arzenc-de-Randon
The Charpal Plateau is largely wooded, but it has retained an exceptional concentration of peat bogs (a complex of priority habitats), including the largest in Lozère, which can cover up to 25 hectares. It is one of the most interesting sites in Languedoc-Roussillon for the conservation of peat bogs: indeed, several stages of development and transitional features leading to wet meadows can be found there. These typical acidic peat bogs are associated with heathland and nard grass meadows. It is one of only two sites in the region where the orchid Hammarbya paludosa is found, alongside the clubmoss Lycopodium inundatum, which is very rare in Languedoc. Also worth noting is the presence of the otter (Lutra lutra). Source: National Museum of Natural History, Natura 2000 network.
