From the geometric paths of Parisian parks to the flower-filled orchards of the Pays d’Auge, via the dazzling light of Provence, the garden runs like a subtle thread through André Hambourg’s work. For the artist, it becomes a place of intimacy, contemplation and creation. Even in his early years in Paris, Hambourg was already drawing inspiration from the capital’s green oases. The Jardin du Luxembourg features regularly in his paintings. But it is above all the gardens of his homes that occupy a special place in his work. In Provence, first in Mougins and then in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, he captured the play of light, the dance of the foliage in the mistral, and those late afternoons when shadows stretch across the ground. The colours there are vivid, almost dazzling, reflecting a bountiful natural world that the painter captures with tenderness and sensuality. Finally, it is the gardens of Normandy that feature prominently and enduringly in his body of work, particularly that of his home in Englesqueville-en-Auge. It became the setting for a patient observation of the passing of time. There, Hambourg set up his easel as the seasons changed and painted apple trees weighed down by snow or laden with blossoms, as well as domestic scenes, such as his goats grazing on lush grass. In soft, almost pastel hues, the Norman garden thus becomes a silent chronicle of everyday life, imbued with poetry. Through this exhibition, visitors are invited to explore ‘André Hambourg’s gardens’, not merely as decorative motifs, but as fragments of a personal geography, in which the artist reveals his sensitive relationship with the world, with light, and with the passing of time. Curated by: Annie Madet-Vache, Director of the Musée des Franciscaines.
