Of all the boules games, ‘boule de Fort’ is by far the most widely played and the most characteristic of the Anjou region. Its uniqueness stems from the combination of a curved playing surface (25 metres long by 7 metres wide, with slopes rising 35 to 40 cm at the sides) and a ball with an iron ring, one side of which is heavier than the other, known as the ‘Fort’ (the iron-rimmed ball weighs 1.4 kg, is 12 cm in diameter and 9.5 cm thick). Players push these balls and try to get them as close as possible to the ‘maître’, also known as the ‘petit’.
