Le Prieuré de La Charité-sur-Loire
Prieuré - Centre-ville, 58400 La Charité-sur-Loire
The priory, founded in 1059 by the powerful Order of Cluny, formed the nucleus around which the town would develop. A major stop on the routes to Santiago de Compostela and an essential stopover on the Loire, the monastery grew in wealth and very quickly came to play a vital role within the Cluniac network. La Charité-sur-Loire became one of the five ‘eldest daughters of Cluny’ and extended its influence over 45 priories and 400 dependencies. In the 12th century, the Church of Notre-Dame was the second-largest church in Christendom after Cluny, with more than 200 monks living in the buildings, which covered an area of 3 hectares. The Hundred Years’ War, followed by the Wars of Religion, gradually weakened the town, a strategic stronghold on the Loire between Burgundy and Berry. In 1559, a massive fire hastened the monastery’s ruin, devastating the entire nave, a large part of the priory and the town. Major building works in the 17th and 18th centuries contributed to the revival of the town and the priory; with the nave being rebuilt over four bays instead of the original ten (significant remains are visible on the façade of the Tourist Office, at the entrance to the church). After the Revolution, the priory, sold as national property, was incorporated into the urban fabric. Some of the buildings were occupied by private individuals and shopkeepers. Whilst the present nave dates from the late 17th century, the chancel and transept have retained the architectural elegance of the 11th and 12th centuries. The fame of Notre-Dame Church is mainly due to the richness of its sculpted decoration, notably a remarkable series of capitals and pilasters, not to mention two tympanums. The first, the Virgin Mary tympanum, is still in place at the foot of the Sainte-Croix bell tower. In 1840, the second, the Transfiguration tympanum, was moved inside the church for better preservation. Prosper Mérimée, inspector of historic monuments, had the Church of Notre-Dame listed, thereby saving it from destruction, as the original route of the royal road from Paris to Nevers ran through the nave. Since 1998, it has been listed by UNESCO as a ‘World Heritage Site as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France’ on the Vézelay route. The Priory of La Charité, Cité du Mot Since 2001, the Priory of La Charité has been the subject of an extensive restoration project; the various areas are gradually being reopened to the public, who are discovering them with wonder. The year 2012 brought a creative touch to the monument with the installation of contemporary stained-glass windows in the chapter house. Since 2001, a major restoration project 2001–2004: landscaping of the Benedictine garden and protection of the remains of Saint-Laurent Church 2003–2004: restoration of the priory’s east façade 2005–2008: restoration of the ground floor of the priory’s east wing (chapter house, Mérimée Room, east gallery of the cloister) 2007–2008: restoration of the ground floor of the north wing of the priory (18th-century rooms and north gallery of the cloister) 2010–2011: restoration of the exterior of the north wing and refurbishment of the cloister 2012: restoration of the main gateway 2015: repair of the roofs and structures of the east wing of the priory. Consolidation of the Mérimée passage. Further projects are planned: refurbishment of the east wing of the priory, refurbishment of the castle courtyard, and repair of the roofs of Notre-Dame Church. The ‘City of Art and History’ and ‘Cultural Meeting Centre’ designations In 2011, La Charité-sur-Loire was awarded the ‘City of Art and History’ designation. This designation recognises the work carried out over more than 10 years and sets new quality standards for the years to come. In 2012, La Charité-sur-Loire became a ‘Centre Culturel de Rencontre’ – a rare distinction (held by only 15 sites in France) which combines a remarkable site – in this case, the priory – with a strong thematic focus – ‘the word and creativity’ – alongside a high-quality cultural programme. Thanks to these accolades, the La Charité site, recognised at national level
