Sentier de la vallée des Cailles

Place de l'église, 28260 Boncourt

WebsiteDirections

The Vallée des Cailles boasts some beautiful calcareous grasslands, managed by the Centre Region’s Conservatoire d’Espaces Naturels. An exceptional site recognised as a regional nature reserve, where magnificent orchids flourish in an almost southern climate. Unmarked footpath.

A small enclave to the east of the Dreux Forest, the Vallée des Cailles boasts some beautiful calcareous grasslands and woodland set within a dry valley on the edge of the state-owned forest. The grasslands were formerly maintained by grazing, which gradually ceased in the early 1980s. On the slopes, the limestone has helped to preserve a distinctive flora and fauna. This area is a true ecological haven where three distinct habitats can be observed: the forest edge, the centre of the grassland, and the copses and hedgerows. In May, the south-facing grasslands are teeming with all manner of insects. Hoverflies, bumblebees, honeybees and solitary bees flit from flower to flower. It is not uncommon to see the sand lizard basking in the sun.
