CallDirections

The Church of Saint-Martin, a relatively recent building (1903–1904), is situated opposite the site of the 13th-century Romanesque church, but has retained the former high altar from the previous church and the tabernacle (17th century). For centuries, right up until the Revolution, it was administered by Saint-Savin Abbey. As it had fallen into disrepair, its reconstruction was deemed necessary. Whilst the new church was being built, services were held in a barn (the Lacaze barn). A government grant, a loan and the voluntary labour of the parishioners were required to build it. The work was supervised by the parish priest, Father LOUSTEAU (1899–1932), who initiated the project. During the Revolution, the five bells were taken down and two were buried. After the turmoil of the Revolution, only one was recovered; it dates from 1552 and once again adorns the belfry alongside two others (from 1893 and 1965). The second bell has never been found. An information sheet is available in the entrance hall. Inside, the tabernacle attributed to Jean BRUNELO (late 17th century) consists of the tabernacle itself, framed by twisted columns and flanked by two statuettes: Saint Peter on the left and Saint Paul on the right. The central panel depicts Christ on Good Friday (Ecce Homo), with bonds on his wrists and a crown of thorns, flanked on the right by a panel depicting the scene of the Annunciation and on the left by that of the birth of Jesus. In 2004, the restoration of the presbytery, on the right-hand side of the church, led to the rediscovery of Gothic openings, including a small-columned window, with a design reminiscent of one of the seals of the Order of the Knights Templar (Solomon’s Temple in Jerusalem), according to the craftsman Jean-Marie PRAT.
