Eglise du Sacré-Coeur
3 Rue du Pauvrement, 25400 Audincourt
Built after the Second World War, between 1949 and 1951, in the ‘Autos’ district of Audincourt, thanks to a skilful collaboration between supportive parishioners, dedicated clergy and inspired artists, the Church of the Sacred Heart is a jewel of light. Fernand Léger, a remarkable 20th-century artist, made this church an unmissable landmark of sacred art. He created 17 stained-glass windows. It is through rich symbolism that the various stages of Christ’s Passion are conveyed to the faithful and visitors alike. As a painter and visual artist, Fernand Léger was highly adept at adapting his designs to the demands of stained-glass work. He utilised the characteristic fragmentation of the glass squares forming the windows to shred Christ’s seamless robe—which usually symbolises the unity of the Church—to tatters. Through this division, the artist sought to highlight the divisions that exist amongst Christians. These stained-glass windows are remarkable not only for their artistic quality but also for the ideas that Fernand Léger sought to convey through their use, at times challenging the conventions of religious art. However, it is at the heart of the baptistery that the light is most vividly expressed, imbuing the space with a pleasant, enveloping warmth. Jean Bazaine, exploring the theme of living water here, drew inspiration from verses in the Book of Wisdom to create this fresco. A masterpiece of clarity, it is a symphony of colours that harmonises with Etienne Martin’s baptismal font, carved from a block of Volvic lava. Please note: the Sacré-Cœur Church is hosting the exhibition ‘From the Creative Gesture to the Quest for the Sacred’ from 20 June to 21 September, on Fridays and Saturdays from 2 pm to 6 pm. On these opening days, you can (re)discover and enjoy the exhibition focusing on Jean BAZAINE (comprising 15 kakemonos), who devoted all his artistry and passion to gifting our region with such a beautiful, joyful and vibrant work, in harmony with the church and Fernand Léger’s magnificent stained-glass windows.
