Abbatiale Saint-Pierre de Brantôme

Boulevard Charlemagne, Abbaye de Brantôme, 24310 Brantôme en Périgord

CallWebsiteDirections

A church with a rectangular plan comprising three bays – two for the nave and one for the chancel – rebuilt following the Hundred Years’ War. The structure is crowned by three Angevin vaults with a highly domed profile. It dates from the 15th century and is dedicated to both Saint Peter and Saint Sicaire, one of the Holy Innocents of Bethlehem killed on the orders of King Herod, according to the Gospel according to Saint Matthew. A fragment of the child’s relic is carefully preserved within the church in an elegant reliquary. Situated on one of the many secondary routes leading from Vézelay to Santiago de Compostela, Saint Sicaire was venerated by numerous pilgrims. The 19th century saw it listed as a Historic Monument, as well as its restoration by the architect Paul Abadie (1812–1884).
