Le Vieux Bassin
Montée Barret, 13190 Allauch
The Vieux Bassin is the village’s old water reservoir, built between 1885 and 1887. The finest achievement of the 19th century was the water supply system that the villagers had been waiting for all their lives...
For many centuries, the “Grand Puits” and the Gayedon wells, together with the cisterns in the houses that collected water from the roofs, were the only sources of water for the villagers of Allauch. After several projects had been abandoned, it was in 1887 that water finally reached the fountain in the Place de l’Hôtel de Ville (now the Place du Docteur Joseph Chevillon) from the reservoir built at the top of the Notre-Dame district. The Blacassins pumping station then raised water from the Canal de Marseille up to this reservoir. The vaults and walls of cut stone in the Vieux Bassin were designed solely to contain the water and not to be seen by the public. This water reservoir was repurposed in 1976 to become an exhibition space. The “Vieux Bassin” has hosted a wide variety of events for visitors and, since its renovation in 2012, has served as a unique exhibition space.
