Village d'Apremont-sur-Allier, Plus Beau Village de France
Rue Madame Eugène Schneider, 18150 Apremont-sur-Allier
A former quarrymen’s village (stone quarries) – a peaceful village in the Val d’Allier, Apremont lived off the exploitation of its oak forest and its quarries during the Middle Ages. There were as many as six open-cast quarries in operation until the early 20th century, extracting this soft, golden limestone, which was ideal for sculpture. Transported via the Allier and the Loire, these blocks of stone were used in the construction of Orléans Cathedral, the Abbey of Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire, and the châteaux of Blois and Chambord. The timber was floated down the river. The House of the Boatmen, situated at the far end of the riverbanks, remains as it was in the 15th century and bears witness to the villagers’ livelihood centred on river transport.
