Eglise Saint-Romain de Cartelègue

33390 Cartelègue

CallWebsiteDirections

Cartelègue takes its name from ‘quartaleuca’ – meaning ‘the fourth place’ – as the village was situated on the Roman road running from Saintes to Bordeaux, and the 9 km separating Blaye from Cartelègue corresponded to four Gallic leagues. The Church of Saint-Romain originally belonged to the Abbey of Cluny, and later to Saint-Sauveur de Blaye. Built in the Romanesque style, it dates from the 12th–13th centuries. During work on the site, the remains of a man carrying numerous scallop shells were discovered. This mysterious figure was, in all likelihood, a pilgrim on his way to Santiago de Compostela. The entire church is painted with repetitive decorative motifs that are a delight to the eye. The chancel has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1927. The painting of the Crucifixion and a bell are included in the Supplementary List of Listed Monuments. Also worth seeing is a beautiful painted wooden altarpiece at the apse.
