Garlin, bastide du Béarn

64330 Garlin

CallWebsiteDirections

At the site of Garlin, a transhumance route and a Roman road had long crossed paths. In 1302, the Viscountess of Béarn strengthened the border separating her lands from those of England by establishing a bastide there. The bastide was surrounded by a palisade, a moat – now the Promenade des Embarrats – and an earthwork; it was accessed via three gates. In the 16th century, Garlin was an active Protestant centre. In the 17th century, the Capuchins (whose former convent borders the square) restored it to Catholicism. A few houses still bear witness to 17th-century rural architecture. Old sandstone window and door frames contrast with those from the 19th century, made of limestone. The town hall is currently housed in one of the 17th-century residences, the beautifully restored Château de Hiton; it takes its name from Hiton de Conchez, a Huguenot captain ennobled in 1691 by Henry IV. A detailed brochure for the tour is available at the town hall and the bakery.
