Anciennes fortifications

45340 Boiscommun

Directions

The still-impressive remains of its ramparts and a few fine old houses bear witness to the thousand-year history of the formerly royal castellany of Boiscommun. Having become part of the French Crown’s estates at the end of the 12th century, Boiscommun repeatedly hosted the early Capetian kings, who had a castle built there, protected by an initial fortified enclosure. Thus favoured by the kings, the town – endowed with a royal administration and later a ‘salt store’, and surrounded by extensive vineyards – flourished and grew wealthy throughout the Middle Ages. From this period, the former Hôtel du Grand Monarque and its cellars still stand, as does the presbytery, which occupies what was once the leper colony and later the Hôtel-Dieu, along with some very fine brick and half-timbered houses.
