Bouches-du-Rhône en Paysages - Berre, à Fleur d'Etang

Mairie, 13130 Berre-l'Étang

Directions

This tour will allow you to discover the many facets of the town, which, whilst modernising, has managed to retain its Provençal character and preserve its rich heritage.

The landscapes of the Bouches-du-Rhône are one of the region’s greatest attractions. In 2014, the department was awarded the national ‘Département Fleuri’ label; this mark of quality hospitality recognises initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for everyone. To explore these diverse landscapes, Bouches-du-Rhône Tourisme offers a selection of discovery routes. Along these routes, discover our towns and villages, our streets and alleyways: whether well-known sights or hidden gems, these are the very paths we might take when we want to show our friends our favourite spots. One after another, you’ll discover the lake and the facilities along its shores, historic monuments and a shaded park. Accessible to all, you’ll be amazed by the richness and diversity of these places. The ‘Sentier aux grés des courants’ trail will allow you to discover the full richness and diversity of the Berrois landscape. The lakeside stretch from Port Albert Samson to the beaches at Gordes is both a great environmental success and a delight for local residents, with large, leafy esplanades, play areas and a promenade running alongside the lake 1- From the salt marshes car park, walk towards Place Jean Moulin; opposite the town hall, on your left, take Rue de la République. 2- A few metres further on, on your right, is Saint Césaire Church. A document dated 1041 records its construction. The building was probably erected at the same time as the town’s ramparts. Having been extended several times, its original Romanesque style has evolved into one closer to Classicism. Its bell tower, destroyed by lightning in 1973, was restored in 1992. Its spire, rising towards the sky, symbolically represents the heart of this Provençal town. 3- Walk down Rue de la République; you will pass the Marianne fountain. Then turn left onto Rue de l’Armistice. 4- Cross Boulevard Frédéric Mistral. You will come across a pretty little harbour. Used for both fishing and recreational boating, the Port Albert Samson accommodates 110 pleasure boats, areas set aside for maintenance, and small, traditional fishermen’s huts. 5- Turn left and set off along the Promenade Serge Andréoni. As you walk along the banks of the Étang de Berre, you can admire the sailing boats gliding with the wind, watch the seabirds, and stroll along this beautiful esplanade, which features lawns, children’s play areas and a variety of trees. 6- This walk will take you past the hangars of the former Naval Air Base, the remains of a former naval aviation pilot training school dating back to the 1920s. These hangars are unique in Europe due to their pillar-free interior space; in 1997, one of them was converted into a sports complex (the Claude Jouve swimming pool and multi-sports hall). 7- Continue your walk along the lake to the Butte, where you can enjoy an elevated view of the lake and the town’s outskirts, then follow Avenue Lazare Ponticelli and the memorial to the soldiers of the First World War, until you reach the entrance to Henri Fabre Park. Walk through this 3.2-hectare park, which offers shaded paths providing cool respite and tranquillity, as well as play areas for young children. You’ll also discover a magnificent dovecote as well as the remains of the German occupation of the town in 1942: bunkers. On leaving the park, turn left onto Avenue Irène Joliot-Curie and head down towards the town centre. At the first roundabout, turn right onto Avenue Roger Salengro, then turn right (third street) onto Rue Jean Cristofol. Enter and walk through the park by the Salle Polyvalente. On exiting, turn right to leave the Louis Pasquet complex. Cross Avenue de la Libération and take Avenue de Sylvanès just before the lion statue. 8- Enter Maurin Park via the car park entrance at the junction of Avenue de Sylvanès and Boulevard Henri Barbusse. This park, created in 1992, covers an area of 2,
