Eglise de Cognac la Forêt

Le bourg, 87310 Cognac-la-Forêt

CallWebsiteDirections

The church, which became a parish church in 1265, was originally the castle chapel. It was built in three phases: in the 12th, 13th and 15th centuries. It is in the Romanesque and Gothic styles. On either side of the central nave are two chapels. Each features a keystone in a ribbed vault bearing the coats of arms of the Cognac and Lur families. The church also houses a polychrome high relief of Saint Roch and a bas-relief, both of which are listed as Historic Monuments. The bas-relief is of the same style as that in the church at Angoisse in the Dordogne. Indeed, the Cognac family, lords of the manor, and the Pompadour family, lords of Angoisse, were linked by the marriage of Annet de Cognac and Hélaine de Pompadour. In 1628, they were living at Cognac Castle. The bas-relief is therefore thought to date from the 17th century.
