La fraternelle - Maison du Peuple

12 rue de la Poyat, 39200 Saint-Claude

CallWebsiteDirections

A century of labour and cooperative history, accessible to all! Originating from a workers’ association founded in Saint-Claude in the late 1870s, and subsequently transformed into a food co-operative in 1881, “La Fraternelle” set itself apart by ensuring that all profits were channelled into a social fund, enabling the establishment of welfare, relief, pension and mutual aid schemes in collaboration with other co-operatives. A whole philosophy – a social, political and trade union culture – began to take shape. And what better way than to bring all these different activities together under one roof? Following the example of the ‘Vooruit’ in Belgium, the San-Claudian co-operators purchased a building in the heart of the town and built the Maison du Peuple, which was inaugurated in 1910. As the heir to a realised utopia, the association ‘La Fraternelle’ has been breathing new life into this 4,000 m² building for over 30 years. Today, it is a cultural and artistic space – a place of remembrance, dissemination and contemporary creation – situated in the heart of the town and the Haut-Jura: café, cinema, theatre/dance, music, screen-printing workshop, art library, archives, shop… Guided tours take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4.30 pm during school holidays (all zones). Family tours (for children aged 8 and over) on Wednesdays at 10.30 am during school holidays (all zones). For groups (minimum 6 people) on request all year round (at least 20 days before the desired visit date). Duration of the guided tour: 1 hour 30 minutes + film Cinema: Three arthouse cinemas with 3D facilities. A wide and varied programme, special events, meetings with directors, introductory editing workshops using the MashUp desk, etc. The Maison du Peuple cinema is open all year round from Tuesday to Sunday (may be closed from late August to mid-September). Café: A friendly and welcoming space, hosting artistic events and activities (inner courtyard, pool and darts). The café team welcomes you from Wednesday to Sunday from 5.30 pm (may be closed in August) Shop/art library: A wide range of homemade products and others linked to the activities of La Fraternelle.
