Oratoire Saint-Gens
405 Route d'Eyragues, 13670 Verquières
This beautiful shrine dedicated to Saint Gens consists of a low cippus with a cornice and an entablature supporting the niche. Saint Gens was honoured in the region until the beginning of the century by a pilgrimage in May to pray for rain during times of drought.
Situated on the road to Eyragues, in front of the farmhouse of the same name, at the junction with Rue Benoît Labre, this beautiful, solid votive oratory dedicated to Saint Gens consists of a low cippus with a cornice and an entablature supporting a niche, framed by elegant and understated volutes. This niche, enclosed by a pretty grille, housed, until quite recently, the polychrome statue of Saint Gens. Above the grille, a badly damaged angel keeps watch. The roof is basket-handle shaped – a form rarely seen in the region as it is difficult to construct – with decorative volutes on either side. Saint Gens was honoured in the region until the beginning of the century by a pilgrimage in May to pray for rain during periods of drought.
