Le Bourg, 33760 Lugasson
The parish church dates from the Romanesque and Gothic periods. It is crowned by upper storeys in which firing chambers, fitted with horizontal arrow slits for muskets, may have been constructed. This defensive feature was probably necessitated by the turbulent context of the Wars of Religion. The building’s carved tympanum dates from the 12th century. The Romanesque sanctuary, however, remains unfinished. A new phase of work was undertaken at the end of the Gothic period. The church was then remodelled, enlarged, vaulted and fitted with a walled bell tower featuring a staircase turret.
