CallDirections

Follow the discovery trail through the town, its streets and alleyways – an area renowned for its hidden gems. An ideal route for families.

The landscapes of the Bouches-du-Rhône are one of the region’s greatest attractions. In 2014, the department was awarded the national ‘Département Fleuri’ label; this mark of quality hospitality recognises initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for everyone. To explore these diverse landscapes, Bouches-du-Rhône Tourisme offers a selection of discovery routes. Along these routes, discover our towns and villages, our streets and alleyways: whether well-known sights or hidden gems, these are the very paths we might take when we want to show our friends our favourite spots. Situated between Marseille and the Gulf of Fos, Sausset-les-Pins is a coastal village nestled between the sea and the hills, offering a sun-drenched view of the sea, with its marina, beaches and coves. Originally a collection of hamlets of fishermen and small-scale farmers, Sausset expanded and took shape in the 19th century thanks to the dynamism of its people, supported by the Charles-Roux family. The town now boasts a rich heritage from this era, which we invite you to discover. In the heart of the village, enveloped in the fragrant sea air, this walk takes you on a journey through Sausset’s history, amidst Mediterranean landscapes, the coastline, narrow streets and traditional houses, each with its own unique atmosphere. “SAUSSET THEN AND NOW” 1- Set off from the Tourist Office on the corner of Avenue du Port, take the Traverse des Pêcheurs, turn left and then cross the road. Walk past the Saint-Pierre Club. This club, governed by very strict rules, was reserved for men – fishermen and sailors. Opposite the club, discover the “Villa Fantaisie”. Continue straight on along the Route de l’Etang de Berre; on your right is the “Villa Mauricette”. It stands out, having once been a very imposing sight compared to the neighbouring houses. In 1925, it served as the first official post office. At the rear of the villa, above three steps, you can still see the spot where Sausset’s first postbox once stood. 2- Turn right onto Traverse de la Mairie to reach the Town Hall: Until 1877, Sausset – which was part of Carry – had neither a town hall nor a state school, but only, since 1864, a private co-educational school. In 1877, the Minister for Education authorised the construction of a school, which welcomed its first pupils in 1881. The architect Letz, who had previously built the Charles Roux château, drew up the plans for the school on a plot of land donated by the Charles Roux family behind the church. In 1924, this building became the town hall and school. Go up the stairs to the right of the town hall, cross the garden of the Salle des Arts to Lazare Ponticelli Square and the War Memorial. The railway station lies directly in front of you. Work on the station began in 1910 and it opened in 1915, serving the L’Estaque–Miramas line via Port de Bouc. Go up the stairs on your right, which lead out onto Traverse de la Gare. Carry on for about 35 metres, then turn right onto Traverse Beau Rivage, which takes you to the square where one wall features a trompe l’oeil (bicycle). 3- Turn right at the mural towards the church: It was in 1857 that the idea first arose to build a chapel that could serve as a church for Sausset. It is dedicated to Saint Peter, patron saint of fishermen. It was opened for worship on 11 May 1859. Walk down Rue de l’Eglise, continue to your left and take the pedestrian crossing towards Rue du Phare. Take this street and turn right about 38 metres further on. Go down the steps towards the harbour and head right until you reach the riding school. Above the Quai du Port, you’ll see old buildings dating from the 1920s. Take the wooden footbridge to the harbour roundabout. Take Avenue Jean Moulin, which is straight ahead of you. You’ll see the Château Charles-Roux. 4- Continue for 350 metres to discover L’Ancien Barra
