CallDirections

The Church of Saint-Pierre in Chalon-sur-Saône was built between 1698 and 1713 in the Baroque style and extended in 1898. Its façade was rebuilt in 1900.

St Peter’s Church was built between 1698 and 1713 by two Italian contractors, Pierre Vercelli and Pierre Drogue, who were originally from Novara, in the Milanese region. It was consecrated in 1713 by François de Madot, Bishop of Chalon. It is an example of Baroque art, a style in vogue during the Regency period. In 1790, the Benedictines were expelled from the church. During the Revolution, the church successively became a ‘temple des fêtes’ and a ‘temple décadaire’ (22 Nivôse Year VII, 11 January 1799), then a fodder store (6 Frimaire, Year IX, 27 November 1800), before finally being restored to religious use on 29 Germinal, Year X (19 April 1802) and becoming a parish church. Pope Pius VII celebrated Easter there in 1805 and gave his blessing ‘urbi et orbi’. The left transept was extended in 1898 and its façade was rebuilt in 1900 in the Italian style. The church was listed as a Historic Monument in 1948. This church is notable for its extensive collection of statues (Doctors of the Church, founders of religious orders, the Virgin of the Apocalypse). Some of the statues date from the 17th century. The Baroque architecture remains fairly unadorned (pilasters, capitals with foliage motifs, a very projecting cornice, and a keystone in the choir featuring cherub heads). It features a fine choir organ and stained-glass windows by the Chalonnais master glassmaker Besnard. Of particular note is the octagonal dome at the crossing of the transept.
