Towering 150 metres above the Sancey Valley, Belvoir Castle stands on the site of a Gallic oppidum and, later, a Roman castrum. The first castle was built at the end of the 12th century by Thibault de Belvoir. The present buildings date from the late 15th and early 16th centuries, when the de Cusance family rebuilt the castle following its destruction by Louis XI. In the early 17th century, it underwent further partial modernisation. Abandoned in the mid-19th century, it was purchased in 1955 by the painter Pierre Jouffroy, who breathed new life into it through a painstaking 45-year restoration. Twenty fully furnished rooms are open to visitors and display furniture, paintings, weapons and artefacts dating from the 16th to the 20th century. Not to be missed: a tour of the village, centred around its 14th-century market halls – the oldest and only ones of their kind in Franche-Comté.
