CallDirections

Claude Chappe’s aerial telegraph is the only remaining example in the region.

Claude Chappe’s aerial telegraph was an ingenious means of long-distance communication developed in 1794. At the time, a visual signal could be transmitted between Paris and Bayonne in 40 minutes! Standing an impressive 23 metres tall, it rivals the bell tower of the neighbouring church. It is one of the few surviving towers; whilst more than 500 were originally built in France, only around ten remain today. Having been restored, the Baccon Tower has been converted into a museum. The Baccon Patrimoine association offers guided tours of the Chappe Tower. Tours take place on the first Sunday of every month, from April to September, from 2 pm to 5 pm. Visits by appointment are also available by contacting the Baccon Patrimoine association.
