67120 Ergersheim
Situated between Molsheim and Strasbourg, Ergersheim is a village with a long tradition of wine-growing and farming, forming part of the Strasbourg wine-growing region: the Couronne d’Or. Lying on the Way of St James, the village was, until recently, home to a community of Cistercian nuns. The Baroque Church of Saint Nicholas was rebuilt in the 18th century. The lower part of the side bell tower dates back to the Middle Ages, whilst the nave contains some interesting Baroque furnishings. The main façade features a Neo-Romanesque portal dating from 1873. Nearby are two chapels, reminders of villages that have disappeared: Altbronn and Rimlen. To the north stands the Chapel of Maria Altbronn, the only building to have remained intact after the village’s disappearance; it was erected in 1397 as a pilgrimage site in honour of the Virgin Mary. To the east, the Chapel of Saint Michael (12th century), nestled amongst the vineyards, belonged to the hamlet of Rimlenheim, which disappeared in 1444. The village is crossed by the Bruche Canal, founded by Vauban. The old towpath has been converted into a cycle path: the Bruche Canal Cycle Route, which links up with Strasbourg.
