Circuit du Roussard - VTT
72240 La Chapelle-Saint-Fray
As well as offering numerous lovely views of the surrounding countryside, this walk takes in several points of interest, such as Saint Mamert’s Church, a stone cross and the ruins of Le Vau – the remains of a Gallo-Roman villa that are very well preserved. Approximately 20 km south-east of Sillé-le-Guillaume The route starts from the hiking map stand located in the car park by the football pitch. Along the way: • Head down towards the village; at the small roundabout, turn left, then take the first left in front of the Town Hall. • Walk back up to the first dirt track on the left, 600 metres further on; continue straight ahead and cross the road to join the track opposite. Continue along this track to the hamlet known as ‘Les Bruyères’, then turn right towards the woods. • Walk through the woods to the road and turn right. Pass the water reservoir on your right, then turn right after 150 m to take the forest track. • Carry on for 800 metres (watch out for a 90° bend), then continue for 150 metres until you reach a fenced-off field and turn left (note: the path is not very visible). • Carry on to the road, turn left and take the first path on the left. Follow the track for 900 m and cross the road to join the ‘Bois des Iles’ track on the other side. • Continue along the track, then turn left and right 100 m further on. Take the first right, then go straight on at the next junction. At a place called ‘Les Cocuères’, turn right, then take the first left and the second path on the right. • When you reach the road, turn left, then right at the crossroads to reach the La Bazoge forest, and take the first path on the right. Take the road on the left, then head down the first path on the right, passing by the place known as ‘La Godinière’ and then alongside the water tower. Cross the road and follow the path opposite for 1,000 metres. • Turn right onto the road, then 100 m further on, take the first path on the right. About 500 m further on, turn left and continue for 1,700 m until you reach the road. Turn right onto the road, then left until you reach a crossroads. • Turn right and follow the road downhill to the crossroads. Turn left and take the first right, then follow the path on the right as well. 100 m after the hamlet known as ‘La Houssaie’, take the paths on the right twice in succession, going round the football pitch. • When you reach the road, turn left to return to the starting point map in the car park. Places of interest: • Gallo-Roman remains: the Gallo-Roman period left its mark, as evidenced by ‘les ruines du vau’, the remains of a Gallo-Roman villa. • St Mamert’s Church: iron ore was once mined in the Bois des Iles. The neighbouring woods are also former sites where Roussard sandstone was quarried. In the town centre, you can admire St Mamert’s Church, built from this material like many other buildings in the region. • Moulin de la Cochetière: along the stream known as ‘Le Vray’, there were once several wheat mills. Only one remains: the Moulin de la Cochetière, whose bucket wheel is still visible. Unfortunately, it is no longer in operation.
