Bazas Médiévale

33430 Bazas

CallWebsiteDirections

Bazas is a town magnificently fortified by nature, which required only a few engineering works to make it impregnable. The Roman presence is a well-established fact. Not a single house has been built there without finding, in its foundations, rimmed bricks, coins, shards of pottery or other objects dating from that distant era. Bazas was therefore characterised as a Gallic oppidum, the famous Cossio, which became the capital of the Vasates tribe in the 4th century. The town was built on a rocky promontory jutting out between two deep valleys. Natural in appearance and triangular in shape, this promontory narrowed at its base—where a cut had been carved out—and was protected on both sides by steep slopes, one descending southwards to the Beuve stream, which flows at the bottom of the valley, and the other northwards to one of its tributaries.
