CallWebsiteDirections

A charter dating from the year 977 records the restoration of the priory of Regula and its affiliation to Fleury-sur-Loire Abbey (Nièvre). No remains survive of the building constructed in the 10th century. Most of the surviving buildings date from the 18th century: the south façade, the stairwell, the ironwork by Blaise Charlut and the cloister. At the centre of the double-winding central staircase, a shell serves as a reminder that La Réole was a fording point on the Garonne, on the route to Santiago de Compostela. Abandoned by the monks as early as 1790, the priory was damaged during the Revolution and under the Empire. Today, it houses the town’s administrative offices.
