Quartier d'Aulès, 40700 Doazit
Built in the 12th century, the Church of Saint John the Baptist is one of the finest in Chalosse. The Romanesque apse is adorned with four slender arcades. Four of the five windows above are now bricked up. The apse is supported by four buttresses. Like many churches in the Landes region, the church was fortified in the 14th century. In 1435, a funerary and votive chapel was built against the north wall – a true Gothic masterpiece, with the intricate stonework of the arcades and lancet windows exquisitely adorning this austere entrance. Its furnishings are remarkable: a stone pulpit and wooden staircase, capitals and vault spandrels on corbels decorated with finely carved figures, a majestic altarpiece and high altar in polychrome wood… and even a well. Also note the beautiful carvings on the tombs and keystones, which are stored in the nave.
