Chateau de Ray-sur-Saône
Rue du château, 70130 Ray-sur-Saône
Perched on a rocky outcrop, the Château de Ray-sur-Saône – a building of remarkable architectural beauty – is nestled in the heart of a six-hectare wooded park, a veritable oasis of greenery. The site offers an exceptional view over the village of Ray-sur-Saône, a charming little town in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. An iconic feature of the landscape, its imposing silhouette dominates the Saône valley. Built in the Middle Ages, Ray was then a fortress belonging to powerful lords. Largely destroyed by the wars of the 17th century, the château was rebuilt on the ruins of the old fortress. It was in the 18th century that it took on the classical appearance it still retains today. The gardens also bear witness to the various landscaping projects that have accompanied the castle’s evolution. This majestic site has been fully listed as a Historic Monument since 2009. Since October 2018, the Haute-Saône Department has been undertaking a major restoration programme. The château remains open to the public whilst work is underway! Visits to the château are by guided tour only, and booking is essential.
