Barr, capitale viticole

67140 Barr

CallDirections

This charming little town of 7,000 inhabitants, situated on the Wine Route between Obernai and Sélestat, is well worth a stop. I’m going to show you that history doesn’t have to be a daunting prospect. Let’s set off on a little tour through the heart of the town – follow me! Let’s meet at the Town Hall square, THE place to see in Barr, especially if it’s your first visit: The Town Hall, built on the ruins of an ancient fortified castle destroyed by the Devil (yes, really!) and whose Renaissance-style façade is well worth admiring. Opposite is the Auberge du Brochet, which has stood the test of time and could well have received positive reviews on Tripadvisor as far back as 1521 – the town’s many inns were all named after animals. The fountain known as ‘l’Enfant à la Conque’, from the top of which a child enjoys listening to the town’s gossip and other little stories… Prick up your ears – you might just hear something! As you approach the fountain, can you see the bell tower? That’s the Protestant church, built on the hills above Barr, near the vineyards. I invite you to climb the steps to reach it. Here we are facing the Kirchberg. This vineyard-covered hill has given its name to a ‘grand cru’ – that is, a wine produced exclusively here (which you should definitely try at one of Barr’s winegrowers’!) Turn round and take in the view: it’s worth a quick photo, isn’t it? Let’s carry on: I suggest we head back down to the town centre via the Sentier des Amandiers, a pleasant tree-lined path.  To find out more about this wine-growing town, head to the Tourist Office on Place de l’Hôtel de Ville, where the tourist advisors will share their top tips with you.
