Mémorial de Clauzon

40250 Lahosse

CallWebsiteDirections

The Mugron area experienced its darkest days of the Second World War between 8 and 16 July 1944, with the arrival of a special German repressive unit. Determined to dismantle the local Resistance network, the soldiers ransacked houses and arrested entire families. Jean Dangoumau and Henri Campagne were shot in the woods of Clauzon, whilst Jean Deyris and Daniel Saubusse were shot dead in their own homes. In 1946, four memorial stones were erected in memory of those who died for France, at the sites where they were killed. They are now gathered together at the Clauzon Memorial, which was inaugurated on 12 July 2003. A commemoration takes place every year on this same date. These graves, which appear very modest, symbolise the daily and courageous struggle waged by men and women against the extreme ideology that then prevailed in France.
