79170 Vernoux-sur-Boutonne
A 16th- and 17th-century residence, built around a square courtyard, enclosed and defended by two towers (formerly three). The old manor house (16th century) was remodelled as early as the 16th century by Briand des Gittons, who was made a Knight of Malta in 1549 and Commander of Mauléon in 1580. The 17th-century residence was probably built to plans by François Le Duc, known as Toscane, in 1697. He was the architect of Celles Abbey, the Carmelite convent in Niort, Saint-Maixent Abbey and Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe Abbey. The owners were the Le Coq de Saint-Léger family. The estate passed by marriage in 1704 to the de Bremonds d’Ars family and, through marriage again, to its current owner. It has been undergoing a major restoration programme since 1980. The dovecote, the largest in the Mellois region, contains 2,000 compartments. Visits by appointment or during event times.
